报告摘要:
The Ashby process for materials selection in engineering design provides a rigorous process forranking candidate materials for a specific application. By considering the functional requirementsobjectives (e.g. minimising mass or cost) and constraints (minimum loads, maximum temperatures) of anengineered component, merit indices can be derived to identify the best performing materials for a givendesign problem out of a list of pre-existing materials. Conversely, we can also use these merit indices toguide the design of new materials and composites to improve their performance for specific applications, such as piezoelectric and pyroelectric energy harvesters. This talk will first introduce the Ashby method forderiving merit indices in mechanical design problems before focusing on piezoelectric and pyroelectricenergy harvesting materials. Piezoelectric and pyroelectric energy harvesting figures of merit will bederived to demonstrate the complex balance of properties that inform research into the development ofcomposites with improved properties for these applications.

Dr James Roscow is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in the Department of MechanicalEngineering, University of Bath. He studied Materials Science and Engineering at the University ofManchester, graduating in 2013. After working in industry for a year, he began his PhD at Bath in 2014 andgraduated in 2018. He was appointed as a Prize Fellow the same year and a Lecturer in 2020. His researchinterests are in the design and processing of functional ceramics driven by the requirements of the application.
